Winter in Nantucket offers a peaceful, cozier vibe with fewer crowds and more small-town charm. While some of Nantucket’s most famous outdoor eateries and activities are shut down for the season, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do on the island.
It may not be warm enough for a beach day, but as long as the sun is shining, visitors can bundle up and enjoy Nantucket’s natural side with a beach walk on one of island’s many pristine beaches or explore the hiking trails in the Middle Moors or Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge.
Historical Sites
On days that are just too cold for the outdoors, Nantucket’s historical sites can offer a fun and educational experience for visitors. Our Historian’s Guide to visiting Nantucket has a comprehensive list of sites to visit, but our William Raveis agents’ top picks include:
The Nantucket Whaling Museum: A must-see for anyone interested in the island’s whaling heritage. Once the whaling capital of the world, Nantucket’s history is deeply intertwined with this industry, and the museum offers an in-depth look through exhibits that include a 46-foot sperm whale skeleton, artifacts, ship models, and the fascinating story of Nantucket’s whalers.
The Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum: The waters around Nantucket were notoriously treacherous for sailors, and the island was known as the “graveyard of the Atlantic.” This museum, located outside of town, preserves the dramatic stories of shipwrecks and rescues that are part of the island’s maritime history.
Food and Drink
Warm up with coffee or hot chocolate at several of the island’s cozy cafes, like Nantucket Coffee Roasters or Handlebar Café.
Fine Dining: Enjoy winter dining at restaurants like Oran Mor, Straight Wharf, or Galley Beach, some of which offer special off-season menus.
Local Breweries: Visit Cisco Brewers for craft beer and cozy vibes. Additionally, many inns and restaurants offer cozy fireplaces where you can relax with a drink, book, or friends.

A fun indoor activity especially for kids is Nantucket Ice. The island’s only ice-skating rink, located in Mid-Island, offers public skating sessions and skate rentals.
