Wide shot of Nantucket downtown facing towards water.

The Edge of Town neighborhood on Nantucket refers to an area just outside the core of Nantucket bustling downtown. This area blends proximity to the historic downtown with a quieter, more suburban feel. It’s an ideal location for those who want to be near the action of downtown without being directly in the middle of it.

Location: Situated on the outskirts of Nantucket’s downtown, this area typically encompasses areas just beyond the historic district and leading toward neighborhoods like Monomoy and Polpis.

Top Things to Do in the Edge of Town

Francis Street Beach: A small, peaceful beach within walking distance is great for a quick (or all day) escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown Nantucket. Francis Street Beach is great for kids and families with its nearby playground and calm waters. However, the beach is small and can fill up quickly with visitors.

The Nantucket Atheneum: Although technically in Town, the island’s historic library is easily accessible from the Edge of Town. Originally Nantucket’s gathering place founded in 1834, the Atheneum was rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1846 and became a hub of intellectual and abolitionist thought, including hosting Frederick Douglass for one of his first public speeches. It now serves as the public library and holds various events on a weekly basis.

Nantucket Historical Association's Museum Properties: Nearby Town’s edge, you’ll find several sites dedicated to Nantucket’s whaling and cultural history, including the Whaling Museum, the Hawden House, the African Meeting House, and the Jethro Coffin House, which is the island’s oldest surviving house.
