Celebrate Thanksgiving on Nantucket with spirited seasonal events
While Nantucket is widely known for being an idyllic summer spot, many locals and frequent visitors believe its magic is unmatched during the holiday season. As the crowds of summer fade and the air turns crisp, Nantucket transforms into a serene coastal retreat perfect for a Thanksgiving getaway.
Thanksgiving morning begins with one of Nantucket’s more spirited traditions, the Nantucket Atheneum Cold Turkey Plunge at Children’s Beach. Brave locals and visitors dash into the chilly harbor waters to raise funds for the Atheneum’s Weezie Library for Children. Even if you prefer to stay bundled up with coffee in hand, the energy of the event is contagious.
Many of the island’s finest restaurants offer elegant Thanksgiving menus. Expect beautifully prepared local fare, think roasted heritage turkey with cranberry compote, buttered island squash, and just-caught seafood specialties. For those hosting at home, Nantucket’s gourmet markets make it easy to source everything you need for a memorable dinner surrounded by family and friends.
Find a list of island dining options that are open for Thanksgiving Day and the surrounding week on the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce site.
From November 24–29, the Nantucket Historical Association’s Festival of Wreaths fills the Whaling Museum with artfully crafted wreaths designed by island artists, florists, and businesses. It’s a visual feast and a lovely way to pick up inspiration, or even a holiday wreath, for your Nantucket home.
On Friday, November 28, downtown Nantucket glows with more than 150 illuminated trees during the Annual Tree Lighting & Community Caroling Ceremony. Main Street transforms into a winter wonderland as residents and visitors join together in song, led by the Nantucket High School Accidentals & Naturals, the school’s a cappella singing groups. It’s the perfect moment to feel the magic of the holidays settle over the island.
Beyond the scheduled events, Thanksgiving week is about savoring Nantucket’s slower pace. Take a long walk along Steps Beach at sunset, browse the boutiques along Main Street, or spend cozy afternoons by the fire in your island home. With fewer crowds and a palpable sense of community, Thanksgiving offers a truly intimate experience of Nantucket’s charm.
