Founded in the late 1600's by farmers and fishermen, Rowayton is a salty little community defined by its waterfronts and composed of many small neighborhoods. It became a major oystering center in the 1800's and prosperous oystermen built handsome Victorian houses. In the 1920's and 1930's summer beach communities developed and now Rowayton, formally known as Norwalk's 6th taxing district which provides many of its services, functions as its own suburb with an easy commute to New York, offices for local businesses, vibrant boating, tennis and paddle tennis facilities, restaurants and an active downtown, all wrapped in the atmosphere of a traditional New England fishing village.

The Five Mile River, separating Rowayton and Darien, is one of the best protected harbors on Long Island Sound, with slips and moorings for hundreds of boats. Kayaking has become quite popular too with "Down Under" kayaking school along the main street.

Although the village covers only 1.28 square miles with a population of about 4000, it boasts plenty of open space to keep its residents from feeling crowded. Bayley Beach is the town beach, complete with pavilion, picnic tables and playground. Pinkney Park is a treasure: a spacious property bordering the Five Mile River with ancient apple trees and an 1820 farmhouse housing the Rowayton Historical Society. There, the village holds community events. On Highland Avenue, the stables of an old estate have been converted into a library and community center - home to a farmers' market in the summer. The Rowayton Civic Assocation sponsors many events such as the Memorial Day Parade, a summer concert series, a fund raising country fair called the River Ramble and a Labor Day swim. The Rowayton Fire Department is a volunteer group. The Rowayton Arts Center, Historical Society and Rowayton Gardeners are all run by volunteers, contributing to the flavor of the village.

Rowayton, a waterfront neighborhood within Norwalk, was purchased from the Siwanoy Indians about 1651 and is a part of Fairfield County, CT. Rowayton has Bailey Beach as well as private beaches that service Bell Island, Pine Point and the Beach Association and the private beach clubs of Roton Point, Wee Burn and the Rowayton Yacht Club, with many waterfront properties for sale. Rowayton has the personality of a village with quaint shops, restaurants, boating, Pinkney Park, a public library, art center, tennis and paddle tennis courts and many family oriented activities throughout the year. A short walk to the Rowayton train station, makes the commute to New York City an easy one. There is a wonderful diversity of homes for sale at the present time in Rowayton and with interest rates at an all time low, a real estate purchase in Rowayton, presents not only a good investment, but also a premier lifestyle.
